Mindfulness isn’t a belief system. You don’t need to believe in mindfulness to appreciate the benefits, that would be like saying you need to believe in exercise! For mindfulness to be effective all you need to do is practice and apply it.
Research has shown that when we meditate there’s a real change in brain chemistry. It’s not a matter of believing we feel calmer and less stressed, the chemical composition of our brain and nervous system changes to bring about the benefits. The transformation occurs during meditation and with regular practice it can become a part of our everyday experience.
Put simply, when we bring our attention to the present moment, in meditation, levels of the ‘stress hormone’, cortisol, decrease and levels of ‘happy hormones’ or neurotransmitters such as serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins increase. This feelgood effect is real, not imagined. All we need to do is practice!
